A Big Win For The Kids

Four Teams Head to Knoxville for the Global Championship

Deb Woods explained to me that the Nashoba Regional School District is sending four teams (two from Stow’s Hale Middle School and two from the regional high school) to the Destination Imagination Massachusetts State finals on April 1st at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

They competed with 150 other teams from other schools in Massachusetts, Deb explained nearly breathless with excitement, and all four teams came in either first or second and are going to the Global Competitions in Knoxville, Tennessee on May 25.

I clicked the link (http://www.idodi.org) that Deb sent me about Destination Imagination.  What is Destination Imagination?  It’s a vehicle for channeling the positive energies of youthful competitors into taking "what they know and what they are good at and learn to apply it to solve challenges, working togeather and cooperatively with a team and pushing the limits of imagination to best, not their competition, but themselves."

Deb continued, “The competition included a challenge called Inside Dimension where kids ad to build two structures that together weighed 14 grams.  That’s about the weight of three nickels and then it had to hold weight.  The Hale team’s structure held 560 pounds.  The Nashoba team’s structure held 450 pounds.”

“The second Hale team’s challenge was called “Back at You”.  They had to perform a skit and design a device that would send and return ping pong balls.”  Their design, Deb explained, served up and returned a basket of 291 ping pong balls.

The second Nashoba team’s challenge was required to perform an all theatrical skit called “How’d that Happen.”  They were required to design scenery and costumes and write the dialogue

From Hale: The "Back At You" team comprised of Robbie Enzmann, Thomas Granger, RC Howe, Caleb Wisch, Alicyn Reverdy, Claire Lavina, and Jason Zelle.

The "Inside Dimension" structure team comprised of Kaitie Ryan, Natasha Don, Sam Squires, Kate Wachs, Sam Masters, and Cory Masters.

The "How'd That Happen" team comprised of Nate Rugo and his team mates from Bolton and Lancaster.

The Nashoba HS team that did Inside dimension and held 450 pounds was comprised of Meghan Ryan, Rebecca Krantz, Molly Porcher,  Jeff Bagdigian, Nick Papanastassiou,  Alex Papanastassiou, and Nick Lawrence.

The other Nashoba high school team consisted of Nate Rugo and team mates from Bolton and Lancaster.

Deb added, “The effort, team work and creativity that these children showed all of us on Saturday were truly amazing.  They deserve a standing ovation as well as our admiration, credit and support.  Please join me in congratulating all the teams from Stow for a job very well done and to provide the teams moving on to the State finals an extra amount of our support.

With the kid’s success comes another big challenge and its one in which you can help.  We are sending 20 kids to the Global Competition in Knoxville, Tennessee.  To get there, the kids need to raise $30,000 in the next six weeks.

You can help by writing a check to the “Friends of Stow Destination Imagination” and mailing your tax deductible contribution to Carole Makary, 156 Taylor Road, Stow, MA 01775.  The kids thank you.
